Accountability With Your Spouse

Every healthy relationship needs accountability. As we read in Ecclesiastes 4,

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”

When you live and work together with your spouse you can help each other in difficult times.

As well as helping each other to be the best version of themselves. Mutual support and holding each other accountable are vital to a healthy marriage. Here are four areas to practice accountability with your spouse:

  1. Spiritual accountability – Your relationship with God should be top priority. Check in on your spouse’s spiritual health. Pray together, do a devo together, go to church together.
  2. Relational accountability – Communication is key to a healthy marriage. Take the time to see how your spouse is doing emotionally, talk about issues, be honest with your struggles. Instead of jumping into a show after the kids are asleep, take some time to just talk.
  3. Parenting accountability – Ashley and I have had our fair shares of “parenting style” disagreements. It’s okay to have different parenting styles, but staying on the same page is vital to healthy parenting habits and a healthy marriage.
  4. Financial accountability – This is a major one for me. You have to have a joint checking account and regular conversations about money. Talk about your finances, know what your spouse is doing, and where the money is going. Schedule monthly (or even weekly) budget meetings. There should be no money secrets in your marriage.

Remember, accountability is vital for a healthy marriage. It’s about love, trust, and unity. It’s about working together as a team to strengthen your marriage and your family.
