Beach Days & Childish Ways

Summer is almost here. Summer means sunshine, oppressive heat, breathtaking humidity, and family vacations. The beaches will be flooded with people eager for sandy britches and suntan lines. Many a man, woman, and child will enjoy the waves and wonder of the ocean from coast to coast. The expanse of the shoreline will give way to the closeness of family ties growing stronger memory by memory. The view at the beach holds a deep appreciation for the grand scale of God’s creation.

Many a family will try to recreate the impenetrable sandcastle that will eventually give way to the force of tidal waves. The moat will offer a bit of hope but with fill beyond the brim, and the castles will tumble like Camelot. The children will bore quickly and fight their way into the water. The sand will provide that squishy and odd feeling between the toes, but the children will push forward on their quest for splendor with resilience. Playful and curious, the kids will eventually walk into the unknown only to find the waves will haplessly beat them back to shore.

Paul used this same dynamic when describing what happens if people are not grounded in proper teaching. The smooth-talking words of unbiblical teachers careen immature believers “tossed back and forth by the waves of cunning, deceitful scheming.” A few questions to sift the truth from the lies.

  • Is this teaching consistent through the centuries, or is this a “new” discovery?
  • Does what I hear line up with scripture?
  • Is this consistent with God’s character?
  • Is God at the center of this teaching?
  • Does this please God?
