Can You Be Trusted?

Bob waited for hours for Juan to show up. Bob’s move had been on their calendar for two months, and per usual, Juan operated on his own slothful timetable. Bob and the other volunteers waited as long as they could and were forced to begin a man down. Juan is a nice guy with a big personality and cannot be trusted with anything important. Bob and Juan are friends. Bob has talked to Juan about the carelessness of being perpetually late, but to no avail. Bob planned for this wisely because he knew that Juan might flake out. Juan cannot be trusted, and his character shows. Thayer pulpited, “A disregard of promises, finally, is like a fungus, which imperceptibly spreads over the whole character.” (Ethics of Success, 1893)

“Trusting an unreliable person in a difficult time is like a rotten tooth or a faltering foot.”

Proverbs 25:19, CSB

A man that can be trusted doesn’t flatter by overpromising and underdelivering. He promises to do what he can do, and if by chance he cannot deliver on the promise, a trustworthy man explains his lack of integrity man to man without excuses, jokes to divert, and hiding.

Do something.

Dare greatly.

Be a better man.
