I love doing exceptional work! As an aviation mechanic, I often looked back on my work and felt a sense of satisfaction. It brought a sense of pride, honor, and dignity. On one occasion, our work center received word that every engine in our F/A-18 squadron needed to have an emergency service bulletin.

It was a ridiculous operational tempo for those couple of days. We carefully selected jet after jet, engine after engine for inspection and repair. Meticulously, we had to remove every engine, perform the inspection, make necessary repairs, and all with minimal downtime. Did I mention that we were at sea and flight operations were not going to stop?

What I remember from those days is a team of men working shoulder to shoulder in Swiss-like precision. We got some attaboys and accolades from those maintenance actions, and we welled up with pride knowing the exceptional work performed. This was work we could not do alone. Such is life. Moments like this are reminders that we need one another, and some tasks call us into a world into which we have never gone. We worked hard and had a lot of fun doing it.
