Habits & Talents

I could hear a golf club purely striking a golf ball. It’s winter in the Midwest, so the sound surprised me. Courses have been closed for a while, but that unmistakable click caught my attention. I went to investigate. Chris, a friend, was hitting balls into a driving net. One after the other, he hit the balls off a faux tee box. His silky smooth swing strikes the ball in the same place every time. With an unforced rhythm, he swings with repetition and dedication to his game.

Chris is a great golfer with decades of player and teacher experience. He has an enviable talent for seeing and striking the ball rhythmically. When I talked to Chris, he reminded me of his dedication to the craft in the off-season by swinging for two hours a day, five days a week. He said, “I don’t want my game to drop off even though I can’t get on the course.” Chris isn’t riding off talent, and he makes it a habit to sharpen his craft. Chris is a golfer, and that portion of his identity shapes his actions.

The same is true of a man of God.

Who you are determines what you do.

What you do displays who you are.

Do something.

Dare greatly.

Be a better man.
