Jesus, the Storm Chaser

Storm chasers are an exciting bunch. The movie Twister premiered in 1996 and gave the viewer a front-row seat to the madness. TV weatherman Bill Paxson and storm chaser, Helen Hunt, find themselves entangled in marital trouble and an attempt to disperse some storm detection equipment into a live tornado. The movie had its moments. It’s not a masterpiece, but it was solid for its time. The film illustrates what we know about storm chasers. A good storm chaser knows the conditions they enter, and they willingly go into the fray… just like Jesus.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 9:6, NIV84

Volumes have been written about the birth of Jesus. Scholars and authors have scoured the political, social, and spiritual conditions of that day, and most agree on one thing, the people of God lived in unrest. Roman rule, Greek influence, and Jewish political corruption made living in Palestine very stressful for the faithful few. These storms created a longing for the dawn of the long-awaited Messianic reign. Fresh off 400 years of prophetic silence, an awe-inspiring miracle happened in an unassuming, podunk place called Bethlehem. Jesus, the spotless God-man, was born into the storms of our sin, corruption, and iniquity. Later in life, he would say, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” That’s a gift and a promise, and it’s still true.

All who trust in Jesus receive perfect peace.
Lean into the Prince of Peace. You will never be let down.

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”
Isaiah 26:3-4, NLT
