Recognize, Remember and Re-Tell | EP. 154

“We are responsible to tell the stories of God’s faithfulness to our kids and those around us.” // Justin Watkins

On EP. 154 Justin joins the podcast as he talks about recognizing the visible reminders of God’s faithfulness in our lives. Recognizing who God is and what He’s doing is NOT an easy task when faced with the many obstacles life throws our way. A practical way to start recognizing God is to start your day with Him – in prayer, in Bible study, reflection. It’s easy to focus on what we don’t have rather than what do. Recognizing God as the source for those moments will help you start pairing them with Him, and can lead you into ways to mark them for the future. Men, we are responsible to tell the stories of God’s faithfulness to our kids and those around us. Recognize, remember and re-tell.

There are 3 things I want to encourage you to consider from this practice –

1)    RECOGNIZE who God is, what He is doing and teaching in your life

2)    REMEMBER those moments by intentionally capturing them

3)    RE-TELL those moments to those who need to hear it

SHOW NOTES:

The culture and practice of faith in the Old Testament was regularly built around visible reminders of God’s faithfulness. From personal names given with intentional meaning, to locations marked and named for God’s miraculous intervention, to holiday traditions and even the entire system of sacrificial offering. Israel created tangible marks in their lives to remember and retell.

“When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22 then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.’ 23 For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, 24 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever.” // Joshua 4:22-24

  • RECOGNIZE who God is and what He’s doing – this is really hard for us because of so many obstacles in our lives.
  • It’s easy to focus on what we don’t have rather than what we do
  • A practical way to start recognizing God is to start your day with Him – in prayer, in Bible study, reflection
  • Secondly, even when we do recognize God in our days, we seldom take the time to REMEMBER them well – and that requires that we become disciplined and intentional to capture those revelations
  • Recognizing God as the source for those moments will help you start pairing them with Him, and can lead you into ways to mark them for the future
  • So for me, writing them down in journals is my go to, it’s a practice you could pick up and start small with just a monthly time to look back and jot down where you’ve seen Him at work
  • And finally, RETELL – because we’re so bad at the first two steps, we need to RETELL these experiences of God to others
  • We are responsible to tell the stories of God’s faithfulness to our kids and those around us that we share life to encourage them to keep trusting in the promise
  • The world wants to know how and why the Lord is mighty and at work in real time, real life experiences, not just quoting Scriptures – Do you KNOW HIM, not just ABOUT HIM?
  • He is the same God yesterday, today and tomorrow – and He continues to make Himself known through real time interactions when we are recognizing and remembering Him

So how can you intentionally work to

1)    RECOGNIZE who God is on a regular basis in your life?

2)    REMEMBER those moments by intentionally capturing them

3)    AND RE-TELL those truths to those who need to hear it
