Music Matters

Ben’s love for music started when he was young. His parents are musically inclined, and as the saying goes, “the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree.” Ben picked up some Vic Firth drumsticks while in single digits and hadn’t put them down. He started playing simple beats and progressed quickly after long lessons and hard work. He listens to different genres of music, and his love for the craft reflects when he notices the small things that make drummers unique. In the past, Ben has struggled with churches’ carefree (or careless) approach to music. Admittedly, Ben’s obsession with music is a bit much for Kylie. However, Ben and Kylie agree that music will be a factor, and the service at church number three just took off.

As the lights dim, a person offers a welcome with a charismatic smile and asks everyone to stand. The music leader started by explaining the history and significance of the song they were about to sing. The five-piece band begins with a song that Ben and Kylie had never heard before. Even with a long, rich history, the band played the song in a modern, upbeat way. The song was called “Onward Christian Soldiers.” Ben was drawn into the style and even more so into the lyrics. Ben actively lives out his faith, and Onward Christian Soldiers said what he believes. Ben can still recall the sound of the men singing that day. The baritone and bass voices filled the room. Ben couldn’t place exactly what it was about that song, even with his musical background, but he knew it seemed right. These are the lyrics that made an impact on Ben.

Onward, Christian soldiers,

marching as to war,

With the cross of Jesus

going on before!

Christ, the royal Master,

leads against the foe;

Forward into battle,

see his banner go!

Ben and Kylie have been at church number three for five years and are actively serving. Ben feels like this is a church he can invite any guy to attend.

Can you say that about your church?

How can you bring about positive change?

Do something.

Dare greatly.

Be a better man.
