Hearing from God | EP. 169

There are a lot of distractions in life, a lot of noise, but God meets us in the quiet.” – Scott Davis

On EP. 169 Scott is back as he continues the conversation this month on solitude. Last week we were introduced to the spiritual discipline of solitude. This week we look at practical ways to get away and hear from God. Solitude can feel intimidating or even boring, but it is a learned spiritual discipline. A discipline that ultimately brings you closer to God. There are a lot of distractions in life, a lot of noise, but God meets us in the quiet. To hear from God it takes a desire to want to hear from Him, an intentional time of solitude, and a trained ear. Start small, set aside 30 minutes 3x’s this week to get away with God.

During your time of solitude with God this week, use these 4 practical tips:

  • #1 – Ask the Holy Spirit to calm your thoughts and speak to you
  • #2 – Breathe out stress and breathe in the presence of God
  • #3 – Thank God audibly for EVERYTHING in your life
  • #4 – Be still and listen

Scott joined the Men of Iron team in October of 2022 as our Iron Rep in Tampa, FL and the surrounding region. Scott and his wife Lori have four children and live in Clearwater Beach, Florida. Scott believes wholeheartedly that we are responsible to help prepare men all around us to live out and leave a leadership legacy!

SHOW NOTES:

  • Scott is back on the pod as he continues the conversation around solitude
  • This week he gives us some practical advice on preparing for a time of solitude
  • As men we often find the practice of solitude to be boring or unappealing
  • Solitude is a learned spiritual discipline
  • I think we forget who God is when we talk about spending time with Him and growing our relationship with Him
  • We have become so accustomed to hearing the “other voices” in our lives that we can’t hear God’s
    • Our own voice
    • The voice of others
    • The voice of the enemy
  • Unlike the other voices, God’s voice comes with a peace behind it
  • How do we hear God’s voice?
  • To hear from God it takes a desire to want to, an intentional time of solitude, and a trained ear
  • Is pride keeping you from hearing God’s voice? Thinking you can do it on your own
  • “The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him.” Psalm 27:23 (NIV)
  • Why is it so hard to slow down and spend some intentional time with God?
  • Are you afraid of missing out on something else? Afraid nothing “big” will come of it? Afraid He won’t show up?
  • As we read in 1 Kings 19, God spoke to Elijah through a “gentle whisper,” not through a powerful wind or thunderous earthquake
  • There are a lot of distractions in life, a lot of noise, but God meets us in the quiet
  • Action step this week: Meet with God three times this week, for 30 minutes each time
  • Use these 4 practical tips during your time of solitude with God
    • #1 – Ask the Holy Spirit to calm your thoughts and speak to you
    • #2 – Breathe out stress and breathe in the presence of God
    • #3 – Thank God audibly for EVERYTHING in your life
