Ben and Kylie just moved into a new town. Bursting with excitement, Ben’s new job, and subsequent relocation has been exhilarating. They connect with people well, so they aren’t afraid of getting to know people. As a pre-move ritual, they survey the internet and see a couple of churches they would like to consider. Ben and Kylie love hard, and they dig in. They are devoted Christians who want to make a difference in their community and attribute their passionate concern to coming to faith later in life. Ben and Kylie became Christians after college, and their poor decisions early in life propelled them in their lifestyle change.

Even though the first two churches seemed inviting, relevant, and with no theological concerns, they needed to continue the search to church number three. They’re a bit embarrassed about the search because they aren’t high-maintenance people. Still, they push past the discomfort into the foyer of church number three. Church number three was different. With one foot into the foyer, they noticed the decor was rugged and modern—no draperies on the wall or faux plants that are a mixture of eyesore and blindness.

Eyes wide open, they glanced over the left and noticed that groups of men clustered together with smiles and laughter. The outsider’s perspective was that people wanted to be there. As they walked through the foyer, they saw the doors that said, “Auditorium.” Bingo. That’s where they need to be. At the entrance, people passed out the usual church stationery. Their tee shirts said, “I am here to help.” Ben and Kylie read each other’s minds, “They were expecting new people like us.” Ben’s jaw dropped as he opened the doors into the foyer. He had never seen an auditorium like this one. It wasn’t the size. It was a place designed with dudes in mind. Ben and Kylie still laugh today because they remember the look on Ben’s face when he told Kylie, “This is a place inviting guys to attend.”

Men should not have to pour out their testosterone and masculinity to connect at church. David Murrow wrote a shocking book on this topic, dropping dimes like, “Many have called men back to church. Now it’s time to call the church back to men.” David Murrow, Why Men Hate Going to Church

Church number three called the church to men.

The experience for Ben and Kylie would bring even more surprises.

Do something.

Dare greatly.

Be a better man.
