Rise By Lifting Others

As I sit in my state’s capital, I look outside the window of a modern coffee shop and onto the street named after a dead president. On the other side of the road is a two-story building with political propaganda on the windows and doors. The propaganda says, “Vote for him and vote for her.” No substance. Just noise. Tis the season, I guess. In this city, it’s always election time. Our state capital building is a couple hundred yards from where I sit, and I am on the battleground of state politics. The tug of war of right or wrong, them or us, waffles back and forth like a tug of war between two powerhouse NFL teams.

It is easy to take cues from political pundits and social moguls without knowing why. We are drowning with information, and our pores overflow with content- with insufficient time to process it. Consuming cultural content is like trying to drink from the falls at Niagara.

Godly men take their cues from someone timeless and whose advice is always trustworthy. We shouldn’t be shocked when people outside the Christian faith operate on the world’s system. The building across the street says vote for this person as if they will save us. No thanks. My Savior didn’t run for office and still gained influence worldwide. Accordingly, a godly man ought to operate on the system of Heaven (Matthew 6:9-10), making motivations more clear. Jesus, the greatest man the world has ever seen, said this, “The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (Matthew 23:11-12, NIV84) Houses and buildings are built upon foundations, and this truth is foundational to the faith.

In my failures, I have found that I usually trample someone else when I climb the ladder of success. However, when I stop to lift someone, we both rise. Like Jordan in his prime… Gamechanger! (Check out our FREE VIDEO RESOURCE, A Man’s Friends to learn more about developing strong, godly friendships!)

Here’s another bit of timeless truth without propaganda, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4, NIV84)

We rise by lifting others.
