Send. Save. Spend.

How would you like to get this message from God?

Look at what’s happening to you!

You have planted much but harvest little.

You eat but are not satisfied.

You drink but are still thirsty.

You put on clothes but cannot keep warm.

Your wages disappear as though you were putting them in pockets filled with holes!

Haggai 1:5-6, NLT

I am taking a leap here, but I am assuming this wouldn’t be a cheery moment for the home team. You may ask why this direct word was even given. People had neglected to steward their wealth in a God-honoring way. They spent everything they made on lavish lifestyles while ignoring the house of God. For 16 years, a pattern of selfishness and neglect swept through God’s people, and for three short months, Haggai delivered life-altering messages from God. The people turned from their greed and began fruitful work on the Temple (Haggai 1:7-12). Remarkably, God still speaks, and people respond faithfully.

The topic of money is always a little touchy. With that, the more sensitive we are too earthly things, the greater the propensity for that thing to be an idol. To fight this tendency, many people have chosen this simple way of handling their finances. Send. Save. Spend.

  1. Send– Send money back to God and God’s work. Here are a few verses to help steer you in the right direction (Malachi 3:6-10; 2 Corinthians 9:6-11)
  2. Save– Put some money back for a rainy day. (There’s a storm coming!) You can determine the amount based on your needs and goals. (Proverbs 27:12)
  3. Spend– Enjoy the money leftover! Take vacations, buy a home, go out for a nice dinner, go to a St. Louis Cardinal baseball game (a plug for last week’s MOI minute)!

The three-pronged approach to money is so easy even kids can do it, and it’s so effective everyone needs to do it!
