September Heisman

The gridiron days are upon us, and football season has officially begun. The trash talking is in full force, and the rumors are still flying from all the preseason drama. Early season excitement excels because every team is “great” until proven otherwise. Die-hard fans echo the same old tripe, and new fans shout their newfound allegiance. Football is America’s sport, and the media types drive it like a stolen Camaro. With the many things to talk about in the world of sports and football, a gallery of sports commentators will echo the annual fodder of predicting who will earn the Heisman Trophy. The Heisman Trophy is awarded at the end of the year, honoring a standout football player who excelled in hard work, consistency, and statistical success. Former winners like Tim Tebow, Barry Sanders, and Lamar Jackson have hoisted the trophy.

Early predictions are just what they may seem, predictions. Yesterday, I heard a sports podcaster begin the conversation about this year’s predicted Heisman winner, and it made me think, “Success is earned every day as a man, and what you and I do matters.” They don’t give out Heisman’s for how well a player performed in September or next month, but it is added up over time. The Christian life is similar. We live every day to receive the hopeful and blessed words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” We don’t become all we are supposed to be in a day; a bad day doesn’t mean we have thrown it all away. Salvation is not based on how well we perform in the Christian life; instead, it is founded upon Jesus’ birth, life, and resurrection (and the fulfillment of the many promises).

You get awarded the Heisman after the season and not in September, so the talk is squabble. September Heisman’s are predictions of what could be under the right circumstances and actions taken within those circumstances. A successful life is determined between the yardage markers of our lives.
