Stay Powerful

The perfect day. Hiking in the same neck of the woods that Native Americans once called home. Jagged formations form a sandstone wall along the riverbank. Starved Rock State Park was created by water and glacial ice slowly wearing away the land over time. The park’s sandstone cliffs and canyons were formed when glaciers melted during the Ice Age. The Illinois River and its tributaries further eroded the land, resulting in the awesome features we see today. The Ice Age went down for a few hundred years after the global Flood of Noah’s Day. Glaciers covered about a third of the Earth’s surface during that time.

The highest point in the park is the sandstone bluff overlooking the Illinois River, which rises approximately 125 feet above the river level. It’s not Half Dome, but it’s one of the natural gems in the state. The history of Starved Rock is legend too.

Starved Rock State Park got its name from a Native American story of retaliation. Back in the day, the leader of the Ottawa tribe, Pontiac, got killed by an Illiniwek while attending a powwow down in southern Illinois. According to the story, during the fights that broke out to avenge his death, a crew of Illiniwek who was getting attacked by some Potawatomi (who were allied with the Ottawa) fled to the top of a 125-foot sandstone rock formation. The Ottawa and Potawatomi then swooped in and surrounded the bluff, holding it down until the Illiniwek starved and died off from hunger, which, tragically, is how it got the name “Starved Rock.”

Water and wind can seriously damage the planet, but let’s not forget prayer is the most powerful force on this Earth.

The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:16, ESV
