The Heart of a Man

The masculine heart is a muscle that when exercised grows relationally strong and full of faith. A man’s heart is often so well protected by fear of vulnerability that it hinders his true essence from others. Dallas Willard wisely pointed out, “Our pride will constantly trap us between desire and fear. Rather than surrender our desire, we will do what we want but conceal it because of fear of the consequences of being known.” The enemy of the heart is no made-up Marvel adversary, and he is real, powerful, and actively attempting to silence the masculine heart. The godly man’s muse awakens with the new heart (Ezekiel 36:26-27, Jeremiah 24:7).

I offer some heartfelt questions knowing that heart matters cannot be dissected in a blog, classroom, or laboratory. Instead, they must be lived, shared, and regularly given to God (Proverbs 21:2). Here goes.

  • Did you love well?
  • Are you a good friend?
  • Do your kids know what truly excites you and scares you?
  • Have you told them you love them?
  • Have you gone on dates with your wife or girlfriend and just lost yourself in conversation?
  • Have you spent the evening with friends and walked lighter because you let out some of what was hidden?
  • Have you given a hug to your kids and squeezed while thinking, “I don’t ever want to miss these times?”
  • Have you ever laid next to your wife to soak in her beauty?
  • Have you ever experienced a time of grief, and someone was there with you?
  • Has anyone ever made you laugh so hard you thought you might pee yourself?
  • Have you ever held your lady tight while the salt air breeze drifts over you?
  • Have you had one of those family talks that you walk away in awe of their closeness?

These are all matters of the heart without a textbook.

They must live them from the heart!

Go all in. It’s worth it.

“When God measures a man, he puts the tape around the heart, not the head.”
