The Mentor

Dawson’s walk with Jesus is envious and contagious. People around him notice his eloquence with bible verses and sage advice. Dawson’s approach to life is full throttle. He loves hard. He works hard. He plays hard. He’s a blast to be around for all these reasons, and he loves to invest in other men. He has poured into guys over the years, and now, an unexpected health scare has him on the ropes. His vigor for life, bad decisions, and upward mobility have given some bad news. His diabetes diagnosis came as a shock. His internal dialogue wrestles, “Men have looked up to me, and now my credibility is at stake. I could have prevented this. I feel like a fraud. I have helped others, and I cannot help myself?” Dawson is in a dire situation, and while he has been doling out advice to other men, he needs some advice of his own. Dawson sought accountability from a mentor and a trainer to help him shed some pounds and regain his health. His mentor shared how his spiritual life cannot be separated from his physical health. Dawson’s not where he will be, but he is better than he was.

A mentor needs a mentor. No one arrives. Christians are all, in the words of the Apostle Paul, “dead to sin, but alive in God.” (Romans 6:11), but that is a slow and agonizing death march of our selfishness, gluttony, and ego-driven lifestyles. A Christian man cannot become who he is called to be if he is soloed off from other men. Dawson is learning this from an unusual vantage point of a health scare.

The mentor needs a mentor.

Dawson found his. Have you?

Be a mentor.

Find a mentor.

Be a better man.
