The Toughest Job You’ll Ever Love

God created us for relationships. God dropped Eve into his life when Adam was still trying to put the furniture together in the Garden. And ever since that epic day, men have been stumbling over relationships and avoiding unfinished projects. We were made to relate to other men, wives, and kids. Think about this. Five of the ten commandments give instructions on how to treat one another. Throughout history, God has been interested in how we relate to and treat one another. I love what one author said, “When all is said, the strength of your relationships will determine the level of joy at the finish.” There’s nothing more depressing that when a man dies, and no one cares enough to attend the funeral or mourn his passing. A man like that goes unnoticed. A man without a relational blueprint that brings faith to his kids is equally bothersome.

Kids are amazing, and they are exhausting. Changing neon green, soiled diapers isn’t the most rewarding thing. Furthermore, getting up in the middle of the night to fix a broken heart or feed a hungry stomach is a weighty calling. Deep in my closet, you will find a shirt my wife purchased that says, “Fatherhood is the toughest job you’ll ever love.” Man, that’s true. We tried (and failed several times) to incorporate the Christian faith into our home, thus, breaking generational courses and planting seeds of righteousness. We believe in the words of Joshua 24:15, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” That may sound a bit high and mighty, and I don’t mean it to be. This has become a rallying cry or, using another analogy, a faith-based relational blueprint for our home. That verse has a sense of defiance and reliance built in. Here’s the entire verse.

But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15, NIV2011

We need more Joshua’s.

More fathers.

Better blueprints.

Grace to lead.
