Understanding and Meeting Your Family’s Needs
It’s impossible to be the father your family needs if you don’t know what your family needs.
This may seem obvious on paper, but it’s much less evident as you navigate the pressures of work and family life. Many things in life will beg for your attention, and some are very tempting to pursue.
But if you are a father, your family should be one of your top priorities.
During a difficult time in Israel’s history, they had two anointed kings. King Saul was driven by selfish ambition. But King David, despite his many mistakes, sought to align with God’s desires. Eventually, David rose to power and had to unite the people. This process is detailed in 1 Chronicles 12, which may seem like a mundane list of names and numbers. However, within this chapter lies a crucial insight for all of us.
“From the tribe of Issachar, there were 200 leaders of the tribe with their relatives. All these men understood the signs of the times and knew the best course for Israel to take.” 1 Chronicles 12:32
In a list of thousands of warriors, there’s only two hundred leaders. The leaders weren’t the strongest or the smartest, but they were those who understood the times and knew what to do.
That’s your job as a father: read the room, get to know your kids, and make space in your schedule to be present with your family. Set clear goals to improve as a father. Most of us know how to do that at work and in our hobbies, but we fail to do that at home.
There are always opportunities to get to know our kids better. Take time to figure out what they need.
Strive to be a man who understands the signs of the times and knows the best course for your family. It’s challenging sometimes, but it’s worth it. Your family’s future depends on it.
