Wooden Stage

Ben and Kylie’s trip to church number three exceeded all expectations. They had walked through the foyer, noticed the people, and now, they stood looking at the stage. The stained wood and rock design were different than they had ever experienced, and Ben knew that he felt comfortable in the space. The wooden design followed the stage up the walls and onto the ceiling with geometrical shapes put there on purpose. It seemed that they did everything on purpose. Church number three invited men to attend, and their church design mirrored that truth.

Ben didn’t grow up in church, and his occasional trips to church only made him more put off by the environment. His mom and dad divorced when he was young. To give the kids “a good moral base, ” they dropped Ben and his brother off at random churches to help their cause. As one can imagine, not much-made sense to them. He did notice that he saw primarily women. He dreamed of growing up and never attending church again.

Ben’s background stemmed from past experiences in churches- churches with different paint, buildings not designed with a masculine man in mind. Church number three was unlike any other church they had attended, and they were about to find out why. The pastor of church number three proactively ministers to men, and his insight shaped the whole design and experience. The pastor of church number three carried himself as a masculine man. He looked athletic and approached his ministry with hopeful leadership. The pastor jokingly said, “In churches today, you may see an albino unicorn before you see a masculine man, but not at our church and not under my watch.” He meant those words.
