A Father’s Invitation
As we continue this conversation about restoration I want to dive a little bit into my own restoration story.
I grew up in a great family, with great parents who taught me about God. Church every Sunday, youth group on Wednesdays, Bible School in the summer. I knew who God was at an early age. I can remember praying the Lord’s prayer every night with my mom, waking up to see my dad reading his Bible. When I look back on my adolescence faith formation, I knew plenty about God, but I never truly had a relationship with Jesus Christ.
As I entered my early twenties, I went to college and moved out on my own, my faith formation slowly faded. The ideas and values I thought were close to me, were easily traded for the things of the world. I spent most of my twenties running from God. Drinking, drugs, girls, and parties, consumed my life.
Despite my foolishness, God was working in the background.
As I continued to choose the things of the world over God, my mom and dad never gave up on me. My mom told me years later that she prayed daily that God would get ahold of me. That I would give my life to Jesus.
Fast forward to 2007, I had not set foot in a church in a long time and my dad asked me if I would go on a mission trip with him to Gulfport, Mississippi. It was a trip to help build homes for Hurricane Katrina victims. He told me he would pay for the trip and that it would be a great father-son experience.
As a kid some of my fondest memories were on the jobsite with my dad as he built homes, so for me this was a chance to relive that.
As I stated a couple of days ago, where others see only brokenness, God sees beneath the surface.
Through prayer and an invitation from my dad, God used that moment to start my restoration story. Check back Friday as I dive into the next part of my journey.
