A Letter to My Son
I wrote a blog last month that was titled, “Who’s in your hall of fame.” It talked about my dad and his life of service to the Lord, sacrifice, and integrity. How his “hall of fame” legacy continues to live on in the lives he impacted. His legacy will live on in my life and my kid’s lives.
This blog brings me to today. Just recently my wife and I welcomed our third child into the world, a baby boy. After being parents of two beautiful girls, this boy has rocked our world in the most amazing ways. It has made me see my dad’s legacy in a new way, as now I have a son of my own.
A letter to my son:
Dear Wyatt Samuel,
Wow, just typing out the words “A letter to my son” feels so surreal. Your mom and I thought we were destined to have all girls. But here you are making our family whole. I can’t get enough of you. Your name carries weight. Carrying on the legacy of my dad as you have taken his first name as your middle name. He was a great man, I wish you would’ve had the chance to meet him.
The amazing thing is that you will know him deeply because of the legacy he left for me that I will dedicate my life to pass on to you and your sisters.
I promise to pursue the Lord with all my heart and to teach you to do the same. I promise to love your mom more intentionally and passionately with every passing day. I promise to put our family first above career, hobbies and the distractions of the world. To love your sisters and you and pursue your hearts, like God pursues ours. I promise to play catch with you, to take you to baseball games, help you build a pinewood derby car, and all the things my dad did with me.
I promise to teach you what it means to be a man, to be a man of God.
Dear Wyatt, thank you for being my son. It’s an honor to be your dad.
