Be Accountable to God
God is glorified when a man pours his life into the service of God and others. A man’s responsibility is to elevate the people around him without neglecting his own needs.
There’s a counterfeit masculinity that says, “Men need to make their women submit” or “Men need to exert power over other people, so they know he’s a man.” This is pathetic, trivial, and childish. Men need to go beyond playground mentality into the high call of manhood, and men grow to be better men in the company of other men. Where do we start? What’s the high bar we need to be striving for? Where can man anchor himself on the climb?
First, I can think of no better place to start than the Westminster Shorter Confession, Question #1, “What is the chief end of man?” Answer: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.” Being accountable to God is not a drudge; it’s a joy. Jesus is the anchor for the soul.
Notice how David describes the path that ensures accountability.
“The one thing I ask of the Lord— the thing I seek most— is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple. 5 For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock. 6 Then I will hold my head high above my enemies who surround me.”
Psalm 27:4-6, NLT
When a man offers his strength to God’s design, he positions himself to understand his power and use it for the purpose that it was intended. Furthermore, when that man sets a high bar he climbs the mountain of manhood as a man bent on glorifying God.
