Dad Fail

When you think about your childhood, what memories instantly come to mind? If you had a great dad like I did, what makes you think that?

I think about how my dad said “yes” every time I asked him to play catch or throw a football. I think about him taking me to his job sites and giving me a little hammer and tool belt. I think about him attending every single little league game.

I can guarantee you my dad had countless ‘dad fails’ – all dads do. But you know what — I don’t remember those. Instead, I remember the times my dad was there for me and all the time we spent together.

As a father to little ones, my personal dad fails seem frequent. Just the other night while putting my daughter to bed, I got overly frustrated with a 7-year-old who refused to do the simplest of bedtime tasks. My patient responses quickly turned to frustrated ones. After she fell asleep fighting through tears, I had an overwhelming sense of guilt and regret about how I handled the situation. A major dad fail.

As I wrestled through those emotions, I thought back on my own childhood and wondered how my dad had handled similar situations with a stubborn and temperamental little boy. And that’s when it hit me—I don’t remember the dad fails; I just remember the great dad that he was.

Dads, you will mess up, you will fail. Don’t let those moments keep you from the truth of who you truly are as a dad.

Your little ones won’t remember the dad fails that seem big in the moment. They will remember the way you loved them, invested in them, and all the times you showed up. They will remember a dad who pursued God and pursued being the best husband and father he could be.

Don’t let the dad fails get you down.

Learn from them and keep showing up.
