Do You Remember?
Jill grew up in the panhandle of Florida, where the sun is hot and the white sand is inviting. Like most Americans, Jill’s parents worked hard to provide for their small and growing family. They grew up in a 3-bedroom house with one bathroom. For a family of five, that meant long lines in the mornings! Their Floridian house was stucco painted white with blue trim and looked like the other houses in the cul-de-sac. The house disappeared amid a quiet neighborhood. Recently, I learned about Jill. Jill grew up in that house, and she can provide every detail of events in that home. The holidays and the Mondays were all collected in a memory treasure chest. Jill recalls everything about her childhood. I mean everything. She had unlimited “cloud” storage before it existed.
Her uncanny ability to remember astounds everyone she is around. Jill’s two sisters have very similar facial features, but their minds couldn’t have been more different. Jill’s brain operates so that even minute details get locked away and can be recalled at any time. People like Jill have vivid memories of childhood events. Most people cannot remember what they had for lunch two days ago; Jill can remember what she ate when she was 13 years old at a random dinner in Podunk, USA. Jill’s memory was not caused by trauma; her unique gifting is called autobiographical memory (HSAM). As you can imagine, her condition is super rare. How’s your memory?
I am sure you don’t have a memory rivaling Jill’s, but do you remember key times in your life? Have you cataloged those spiritual shifts when God spoke, you listened and obeyed? Can you recall the rush of relief that comes after doing what God says to do? The relief of obedience is immense and intoxicating. The love and acceptance of the Father is like nothing else on earth. The saying goes, “In your teens, the days drag on, and in the adult years, the days fly by!” In all the hustle and bustle, it is easy to forget those events that have shaped us for good. Those conversations when God spoke through your wife, a mentor, or a friend. These pivotal talks become milestones of grace worthy of reflection and celebration. What do you remember?
