Don’t Be A Bossy Husband!

Don’t be a bossy husband.

It’s a simple directive and a pretty wise guardrail to put in place, particularly as we talk about spiritual leadership.

Yes, you are, or you will be the spiritual leader of your home. You’re the leader, you’re in charge, and you hold the authority. But, if you strive to lead like Jesus, things will look a little different.

In Philippians 2, Paul sets the standard for Jesus-centered life and leadership. He says, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped but emptied himself by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”

Jesus is God. That means he has everything available to him. He can do whatever he wants whenever he wants to. So what does Jesus do? He serves. Over and over again, Jesus reminded the disciples that whoever wants to be the first, the best, and the greatest should strive to be the least.

Whoever wants to lead should strive to serve. As you serve, you lead.

There’s a fairly prevalent idea that real men demand what’s right and fight off what’s wrong. Real men demand to be followed and have no hesitations about issuing one command after another to their families. What a foolish way to lead.

Sure, you can do that if you want, but I bet it will bring chaos and frustration to your family. Rather than seeing your family as people you have the privilege to command, look at your family as people you have the privilege to serve, just like Jesus chose to serve you.

What does your wife need? What would help her? What could you do for her that would cause her to appreciate you more? Maybe it’s a small thing. Perhaps it’s a big thing. If you know what it is, do it.

Do the same thing for your kids.

As you serve them, you’ll be serving Jesus.

Don’t be a bossy husband; be a serving husband.
