Dream Chasers and Dream Killers

Johnny has a dream. He dreams of one day being debt free and going into the far reaches of the world to share the gospel. He wasn’t raised in a home that allowed for dreaming; instead, his home snuffed out the dreams of youthful wanderlust. His dream-killing father was not easily pleased or appreciative of boyhood ideation. Johnny’s dad only liked the concrete and safe work of farm life. Hard work, a reliable job, and quiet life on the city’s outskirts were the tickets to the good life for Dad. Dad’s “good life” took a machete to Johnny’s dream. His approach to life left Johnny with a void, but God gave him a dream to fill it. Johnny’s dad offered a world too small to hold the dreams of being in the center of the Will of God. Johnny’s mind often drifted off into the Amazon or the Serengeti as he dwelled upon the unreached people that desperately needed God. Johnny is dormant, but the dream is still alive. His mind becomes seared by the brokenness and cruelty of the world, and he senses that going against his father will bring about unwanted stress. Into the frontier, Johnny’s determined to honor God and follow that dream.

Johnny’s story is much like giant slayers who dream big while facing others who can’t see beyond their unbelief and uncertainty. We need more Johnnys and dreamers, and every dream needs an application to match the ideation. Here are a few thoughts for you dreamers.

Attach a goal to the dream.

Tell the world about your dream.

Put your dreams to the test.[1]

Align yourself with other dreamers.

Be a mentor.

Find a mentor.
