Embracing Our Responsibility to Mentorship

One-to-one discipleship is at the heart of the instructions Paul gives Titus in chapter 2 of his letter. It starts with the church discipling us by teaching us to obey all that Jesus commanded. Paul then shows Titus that the sound doctrine we hear is not only to be taught by him but is also to be taught in the context of a one-to-one relationship. Men it is our responsibility to teach the truth we know to younger men. This is mentorship.

“The problem is that men have abdicated their responsibility to be advancers of the Kingdom of God.” – Pastor Joby Martin

As Pastor Joby Martin so boldly said this week on the Men of Iron Podcast, men have abdicated their responsibility to be advancers of the Kingdom of God. Too few men make the time to intentionally pour into another man, but God commands it. According to a 2015 Barna study, only 17% of Christian men have a spiritual mentor.

At the heart of following Jesus is Jesus’s call to imitate him and replicate him. Part of imitating Jesus is replication. I once heard a pastor say, “If you aren’t helping other people follow Jesus, I don’t know what you mean when you say you’re following Jesus.”

To be a follower of Jesus is to help others follow him. Jesus intentionally poured into the lives of 12 men and after teaching them, instructed them to go and do the same.
