Encourage Your Mentor
As a protege I have regularly been encouraged by my mentor. But as we’ve progressed through our year-long mentorship together, and the mentor is helping me, I often forget to return the favor. Maybe you’ve been there before too. As the one being helped we usually spend our meetings talking about our struggles and our issues. The next time you meet with your mentor, think about some ways you can encourage him.
The mentor is just as imperfect as the protege.
They need encouragement in life, in marriage, in their career, and in their faith journey just as much as you.
So to the protege out there thinking of ways to encourage your mentor, here are three things to consider:
#1 – Thank him for the impact he has made on your life: Share with him the specific growth and changes in your life because of his intentional mentoring. Describe how you’ve grown, what goals you’ve achieved, and how he has helped you. No doubt he has seen the growth and change, but thanking him for the role he has played in it will encourage him immensely.
#2 – Listen to your mentor’s wisdom and counsel: If he is guiding you to something and offering up his experience and advice, listen! Be attentive to what he is telling you and put it into practice. Often mentors are a couple seasons ahead of us, they have been there and seen that. Their advice is priceless, don’t miss out on it.
#3 – Pray for him: The mentor is often helping you through challenges and covering you in prayer. Make sure you are actively praying for your mentor as well. Ask your mentor specific things you can be praying for and make time to do that. Mentors are not above the need for prayer.
