The Men of Iron Minute

Entering the Room

How did you enter the room you’re in? Confident and large or insecure and small? Every room has a different role attached. You step into your boss’s office; you’re a subordinate. You step into your church; you’re a brother. You slide into your kid’s baseball game; you’re Dad. You slip into bed with your wife, and you’re a husband. To enter a room like a man, you must be comfortable in your shoes and know your role. Knowing who you are is the foundation for doing what you’re supposed to do.

As I shared in the last MOI minute, Joshua was stepping into a new role, and maybe more importantly, he was following Moses, a larger-than-life figure. Moses prepped Joshua by mentoring him in the ways of the LORD. They shared key moments that were stepping stones on Joshua’s leadership journey. Prior to Moses’ death, he encouraged Joshua with this message, “Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their forefathers to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. 8 The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:7-8, NIV84

Joshua was stepping out of Moses’ shadow and beginning to cast himself as a warrior-leader.

Trusting sensitive information with your mentor gives them a glimpse into a preferred future, wisdom, and courage not to shrink back from their greatness as a man of God. Perhaps Joshua had doubts, discouragements, and disappointments to process. We are unsure of his emotional and psychological state, but we can be assured he faced a daunting task. Joshua stepped into his greatness, and Moses’ mentorship set him up for success. Joshua had the grace and space to make mistakes and would need both. We need both.
