False Faith

Did you know it’s possible to look like you are growing in your faith when you’re not?

False faith was a massive problem in the first century when Jesus was preaching and teaching, and he constantly pointed it out when he noticed it.

On the surface, these people appeared to have it all together. They looked the right way, acted the right way, and talked the right way. If we met them today, we would assume they were growing in their faith. But they weren’t. They were failing.

They read the Bible, prayed, challenged each other to grow, and held each other accountable. But they missed the mark. Rather than developing a meaningful relationship with God, they just followed the rules.

We know this is true because they rejected Jesus. Most of them hated him. They thought he asked for too much, they thought he seemed too extreme, and they felt Jesus couldn’t possibly be all the things that he claimed to be. In public, they looked like they were honoring God, but they weren’t.

How could this happen?

Somehow, they decided to honor themselves rather than God. They slowly started living lives based on looking good, being respectable, successful, and having the right things. They thought they had it all together, but they didn’t. Rather than trusting God, they trusted themselves.

When we trust in ourselves, we miss the point.

Becoming a better man won’t save you. Only Jesus can do that.

We’re not building our lives on better decisions, goals, and accountability. Those are important things, but they’re not the foundation. Jesus is the foundation.

Jesus says in John 14, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”

If the foundation of your life is anything but Jesus, you will be disappointed. Ultimately, you will fall into the same trap as those who rejected him two thousand years ago.

Build your life on Jesus. Believe in him, get to know him, talk to him, listen to him, trust him, and follow him. Only Jesus will make you a better man.
