Fish Out of Water

Ever paused to think about how fish live in their natural habitat? The only time you may have thought that is when watching a fish try to squirm their way back into the water after you caught them. There’s something mystic and majestic about these creatures swimming in the waters God designed for them. The colors, shapes, and sizes are unique, but their physiological makeup is fire. You get that, right!?!

Picture it: the tranquil depths, the shimmering scales, the graceful dance as they glide through the aquatic underworld. There’s a harmony, a rhythm in their existence that speaks volumes about God’s incredible design. These fish aren’t merely surviving; they thrive in an environment crafted precisely for them. Isn’t that a powerful metaphor for our lives in God’s Kingdom? I thought so, too.

Like those fish, we find our truest purpose and joy when we’re in sync with God’s created environment. When we align with His will, it’s like swimming with the current instead of against it. But here’s the thing: sometimes we forget that we are Kingdom, people that are supposed to be sharing our life (i.e. multiplying). We drift away, chasing after artificial currents that promise fulfillment but leave us empty. It’s like a bass you caught that is trying to live on dry land—it’s just not where we’re meant to be.

Let’s learn from these underwater marvels. Let’s dive deeper into God’s natural order for our lives, embracing His ways and finding our truest fulfillment in them. Because just as those fish flourish in their habitat, we thrive when we’re living in the center of God’s purpose for us.

Frank Viola threw a left hook with this, “Fish are dependent creatures who swim in schools. Everything they need to survive is there for them. Consider this image. We take a fish out of the ocean and from its school and throw it in the backyard. You take turns spraying it with the hose every 15 minutes, and every once in a while, you dash a little salt on the fish. This is what modern discipleship has become.”

Our discipleship has lost its saltiness and multiplying effect.

Mentorship and discipleship keep us “salty” and on course with God’s purpose.
