Having It All and Nothing at All

Five Movements

Paul’s words to the men of Corinth are inspiring and punchy.

“Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.”

1 Corinthians 16:13-14, ESV

This verse holds a key for every man. After God, every man is accountable to himself to act like a man and grow to become a better man.

At its core, masculinity encompasses action, strength, leadership, and the willingness to protect and provide. It’s not about dominating others but rather using one’s God-given qualities for the betterment of self and others. Recognizing that men and women are equal in God’s eyes doesn’t diminish the distinct qualities that God has instilled in each gender. The radicals have weaponized equality as an ideal, and God’s men are redeeming the beauty of the masculine gender in our dysphoric world.

Christian masculinity and accountability are intrinsically connected. By embracing the qualities that define masculinity and remaining accountable to God, ourselves, and our relationships, we can navigate life’s complexities with grace and strength. As Christian men, we can honor our faith and positively impact the world around us. Good men want to be change agents for good. Further, as good men, they desire to serve their good God!

A man’s accountability runs in the streams of masculine initiation. Rohr posited these five movements that shape a man’s ability to move from wild men to wise men.

Movement #1: Life is hard. (Don’t run from the pain.)

Movement #2: You are not that important. (God doesn’t play favorites.)

Movement #3: You are the issue. (Our self-driven, ego-centered nature is at odds with your better, future self.

Movement #4: You are not in control. (Accept certain things as they are and make the best of it.)

Movement #5: You are going to die. (Do something with the life, giving it to Jesus)
