Get Out in Front of the Enemy

Boot camps are designed so that you perform the same functions over and over. With cheerful misery, the instructors hammer into a recruit what to do in situations while offering pushups to someone who needs more “instruction.” It’s annoying at the moment, but I have come to appreciate the wisdom and those sadistic pushups over time. They drill things into hardheaded people like me so that I will act without thinking when it matters most. All branches of service are filled with a crosscut of people. When in the military, I had the honor of serving with men from Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and all over this great country. Imagine the collision course of ideas, beliefs, and backgrounds. Those drills, over time, become muscle memory for everyone called into military service. They want a person to act upon the training without having to make a lot of extra effort in decision-making. The genius is in repetition. The repetition creates a pattern of practice. They are creating what Les McKeown calls “predictable success.” The repetition is a way of getting out in front of a problem or the enemy.

Without fail, if you have been around Christian men, they have pounded the idea of getting into the Word. The necessity of getting into God’s Word is not a trope; it’s the truth. One of the most helpful bits of mentorship is two or more men drilling into God’s Word consistently and honestly.

Check out our 30-Day Devo: DISCIPLINE RESTORE(D), and reignite the spiritual disciplines in your life. It will give you simple and practical instruction on reading your Bible.

As you dwell in the Word of God, you are learning what to do. As you practice reading, praying, and confessing, you become the type of person who trusts God more and more. Those spiritual disciplines help reinforce the truth about God and the Gospel that brings life.

You train in peace so you can be at peace during war.

Stand up straight.

You’re a soldier in the Lord’s Army. (Ephesians 6:12; 2 Timothy 2:4; Hebrews 4:12)

Be a mentor.

Be a better man.
