God Expects Company

Ken paced back and forth as the burgers seared and sizzled on the grill. The aroma was a smoke signal for beef lovers everywhere- but Ken was in a tough spot. He and his wife invited some coworkers to connect by the pool and enjoy some burgers. However, he didn’t anticipate his new friends dropping by earlier than expected. Ken’s lack of preparation can be felt by his quiet reluctance to engage in conversation. His coworkers are there, and he is not ready. The patio is a mess, kids’ toys litter the yard, and the pool still has leaves in it. His kids are buck wild, and Ken’s nervous frustration awkwardly seeps.

He had spent the entire morning preparing the perfect playlist, meticulously selecting songs to create an ambiance of poolside joy and relaxation. However, he forgot the most crucial ingredient—prepping the feast to accompany the tunes. Realizing that he had forgotten a package of meat for the meal, he speeds like Earnhardt to pick up some brats from the grocery store. Ken raced back home and prepped the grill as his coworkers patiently waited.

In the end, the cookout became a testament to the authenticity of friendships and the beauty of imperfection. Ken learned that it’s not always about flawless execution or the perfect timing that makes life enjoyable. It’s the shared moments, the laughter, and the support that truly make an occasion unforgettable.

As the sunset glistened off the pool, Ken realized that unpreparedness could lead to the most extraordinary memories and moments.

Ken’s predicament is common to guys everywhere: the task of manhood is greater than our ability, and we may feel like the timing is not right.

God knows. God cares. He says to us,

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7, NIV84

God’s expecting company. He’s ready. Just pray. He’s up to the task.
