God’s Character

There is no denying that church hurt is a major issue. How we deal with it has a lot to do with how we recover from it, if we decide to recover from it at all. The most common mistake I see when talking to people who have experienced hurt is they mistake the character of man with the character of God.

Yes, the hurt was committed by a person at church and yes, many times that person is a leader within the church. Quite honestly, often the hurt occurs under the cover of ‘influenced by God’. The simple reality is that we are a fallen people who don’t always get it right. Check out EP. 209 of the Men of Iron Podcast as we dive deeper into navigating church hurt.

Too often we want to be mad at God for what some person has done to us.

Two warnings about this – one, sometimes God does lead people to help with constructive items for your benefit and two, the enemy wants you to shift your anger to God because it will cause separation between you and Him. When imperfect people represent a perfect God and do things that hurt us, we need to realize that the vast majority of the time, this isn’t proper behavior.

God’s character shows us that He is a God of love, mercy, compassion, and grace.

The first step in the healing process is to get a better understanding of God’s character versus the person who inflicted the hurt.
