Great Mentors Tell You What You Need to Hear

A great mentor isn’t going to tell you what you want to hear, but what you need to hear.

I remember a specific mentorship several years ago that challenged me in ways I had never expected. I was a mentor the year before through Men of Iron and watched my protege grow leaps and bounds. Year 2 as a mentor was drastically different. There was a lot of growth, but a lot of hard conversations along the way.

My protege, let’s call him Dan, was dealing with addiction and needless to say it was intense. But I believe I was the perfect mentor for Dan in that season. Every mentorship I have been a part of always feels God-ordained.

I believe God pairs us with the perfect mentor for that specific season.

I’ve seen it happen time and time again. Being able to mentor Dan during this season was just what he needed. I had walked through similar struggles in my own life, so I felt like I could relate and help him in ways that another man couldn’t. Dan knew he was struggling but couldn’t get out of the vicious cycle of addiction. He needed a mentor who had been there and who would give it to him straight. I had to say some hard truths and do some unorthodox things, but I was ultimately able to help Dan break the cycle.

I am no addiction expert by any stretch, but in that moment I told Dan what he needed to hear, not what he wanted to hear. As a mentor you are there to hold your protege accountability and help them do hard things. When we have another man to lean on during life’s struggles, the outcome on the other side is far better.

This week on the podcast we sit down with Vinnie DePaul as he talks about a near-death experience that changed his life.
