Habits

It takes 60 days to form a habit. That can be good or bad. Do you have any bad habits? Cookies and milk before bed. Smoking. Vaping. Scrolling on FB or YouTube while you are lying in bed next to your spouse. Chewing on pens. Overeating.

Have you tried to break these habits? It’s tough isn’t it!?

I was encouraged some years ago that instead of focusing on breaking a bad habit, start a new healthy habit. Instead of focusing on not eating milk and cookies before bed, decide to go for a walk once a day. Instead of focusing on breaking the habit of smoking, start a workout routine. Instead of focusing on less screen time, focus on reading more books. Often, when we focus on not doing something, we do it more and its grip strangles us.

There’s good news. We have the Spirit of the Living God in us.

Galatians 5:22-23 says “ But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Did you catch the last of the “fruits”? Self-Control. With God’s help, we can create new, healthy habits. Here is more good news, when new healthy habits form, by God’s grace, two or three other healthy habits come with it. God’s desire for us is to be healthy, strong and able to help others in need. Let’s focus on healthy habits.

Self-Control.
