Having It All and Nothing at All

In today’s world, success is often measured by clicks, gimmicks, wealth, and status. It’s easy for anyone to be drawn into the allure of ‘having it all.” The author of Proverbs 23:4-5 gave us the warning, “Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.”

Bill didn’t care! He reveled in his abundance before feeling the weight of his pursuits. But Bill’s story is not just about his rise to success and epic failure that he didn’t see coming. Bill was blinded by his lust for more. He was a self-made man who had climbed the corporate ladder with unmatched determination and hard work. His bank account was fat, his social calendar packed, and he lived in a sprawling home that was the envy of his peers.

Tragically, Bill’s success was accompanied by a lack of accountability. He had surrounded himself with yes-men and minions who never questioned his actions or decisions. His life had become a bubble, resistant to the realities of the world. As time passed, Bill’s unchecked behavior led to poor decisions. He began to neglect his family, prioritize work over relationships, and indulge in unhealthy habits. His spiritual life suffered, and he started to drift away from his faith, as posited, “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” 1 Timothy 6:9-10

Like many empires before, Bill’s business empire crumbled due to financial mismanagement, and his personal life was in shambles. It was at this lowest point that he experienced a Divine wake-up call. He realized that he had lost sight of his values, his faith, and his purpose in life. Bill knew that he needed to rebuild his life, and that meant embracing accountability. He sought out a mentor within his church community, a wise and experienced man who could guide him back on the right path.

Bill’s story is a potent reminder to all Christian men that success can lead to a destructive path when not anchored in accountability.

We must surround ourselves with people who will hold us accountable, challenge our decisions, and help us stay true to our faith.

Be a mentor.

Find a mentor.

Be a better man.
