Healing and Hope

In 2 Samuel 12, the prophet Nathan calls David out for the multiple sins that were literally causing death around him. Last week we challenged you to not only consider your next practical step, but just as important, the people around you.

You need the conviction, accountability, and encouragement of others to come back to the truths of God in this area.

The result of Nathan’s visit is a man utterly broken by not only the weight of the consequence of his sin, but the invitation to restoration. Psalm 51 was written by David as a result. In my own battle against lust, I have read and prayed it multiple times after failing to guard my heart, thoughts, or actions.

The depth to the prayer warrants your full attention but I want to simply highlight four takeaways:

  1. No matter how far you have fallen, grace can lift you up – David’s story is a case of the extremes, and yet there is still opportunity for God’s forgiveness and restoration.
  2. Confession and accountability lead to healing – When David was living in isolated dark corners, things just got darker. Nathan’s accountability and correction ushered David into the light and leads to a contrite confession
  3. Hard work and consequences are part of the process – David wasn’t spared the consequences and discipline he created. Repairing trust is hard. Being vigilant in exploring root causes takes time. Limiting triggers and opportunities takes brutal honesty and swallowing your pride. But it is worth it because…
  4. There is joy and restoration on the other side – God wants to restore the joy of right relationship with Him, remove shame that might be limiting your impact, and ultimately live a life of freedom in His Spirit.
