How Christ’s Power Broke the Chains of Addiction
God said to me: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. – 2 Corinthians 12:9
I felt like my faith was weak if I couldn’t get over my addiction with the Lord’s help. I assumed I had all the knowledge I needed – Scriptures, books on purity.
I hated the behavior that I was trapped by.
I worked to avoid the temptation as best I could. But it wasn’t enough. My wakeup call came when a close friend left his wife and children for a younger woman. What made me different than him? I was escaping into a fantasy world that betrayed my family each time I turned to porn. But I wasn’t as bad as that guy, right? I wouldn’t ever go that far, right?
I thought I was moving in the right direction, but only boasting in the little bit of strength I had on my own.
Meanwhile, my weakness continued to gain ground at the expense of being vulnerable about my need for help.
At the expense of my pride, I decided I needed professional help. I finally started faith-based counseling for my sexual addiction. I spent nearly 2 years working to undo thought patterns, emotional roots, triggers, behaviors and spiritual strongholds. It was a massive step to unlock freedom that I never thought possible. And it started because I stopped boasting in the strength I had and started relying on the power of Christ at work through my weakness.
