How Spiritual Disciplines Shape Us

“In a race, all the runners run, but only one gets the prize. So run in a way to win the prize! Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” 1 Corinthians 9:24

Spiritual disciplines are intentional choices and habits we make in response to God, in order to deepen our relationship. They may often conflict or call us out of our own comforts and can feel hard to accomplish. But the challenge can be compounded when we don’t have a focus on the prize and purpose of disciplines.

The goal is to put us into a posture to be closer to God Himself.

Each and everyday you and I wake up and start running the race of life – and it is filled with countless mile markers along the way of prizes we are working to achieve – some of them are good – your marriage, your family, while others are clearly unhealthy or sinful.

No matter what, you are chasing after goals in your daily and weekly life. It’s not a matter of if, but what, or rather, who really matters. There’s only one prize that is worth it – Everything pales in comparison, nothing else matters- forget what you were carrying or chasing before, because this is it!

Pursue the crown that will last, fight for a life that is truly life, discipline your mind and body to chase after the prize of Jesus.
