It’s Your Time

Mourning leaves a sinking feeling. The emotions burst as the dread of saying goodbye looms. The people of God know one great leader who has just heard that Moses will die. Moses discovers his days are numbered and knows who will follow his lead. What may be confusing is that Moses isn’t a feeble, one hundred and twenty-year-old man. He is a mentally sharp, one hundred and twenty-year-old man. His time on earth eclipses the dawn of a new leader. Uncertainty echoes within the tribes, although God reassured them of his presence. God reminds them of promises that he spoke to them years before, and Moses’ leadership is fading like a comet from view.

“Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, ‘Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their forefathers to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:7-8, NIV84

Moses recounts the Law and publicly blesses each tribe with words of layered nuance and grace. At Nebo’s peak, Moses can see the promised land that he will fall short of experiencing. Moses takes his last breath. The people mourn for thirty days appreciating his greatness. Comets fade, and leaders do too.

It was Joshua’s time. He sat in the on-deck circle for forty years, patiently waiting for time and opportunity. Each battle prepared him for this day. His faith grew as God brought victory after victory. The men in war that fought with him must have seen a glimpse of his eminence. He had proven himself to be a loyal leader and servant-hearted warrior; now, it was his time. He led them into the Promised Land. It was their time.

Now, it’s your time.

What has God been prepping you for?

God has been getting your attention through discomfort and irritation. When you opened the Word of God, he spoke in the silence. Your excitement showed you, and you ran out of words to explain how you felt. God is prepping you. Joshua knew that he would succeed Moses, and he had to step into the position God had been preparing for. What has God been prepping you for?
