Learning to Accept God’s Unconditional Love

Romans 8:38-39 // And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Do you believe that there is literally nothing that can separate you from God’s love?

When I was younger, in high school and beginning of college, I didn’t have a personal relationship with God, and didn’t know the full, unconditional love of my heavenly Father. At that point in in time, I knew a lot about God, but never actually knew Him personally. So, when I was going through those seasons of poor decisions that left me depressed and carrying shame and guilt, I didn’t feel like I could turn to God. And I didn’t believe that He could ever fully love me because of the sins I had committed.

But one mentor of mine challenged me during that time. He balanced the line of grace of and just let me heal and share what was going on in my head, heart, and soul during that time. But the main thing that changed the way I thought about God’s love was when He told me…

“Roman, you not accepting God’s love, is you looking at Jesus dying on the cross, and saying ‘that’s not enough.”

That hit me hard. It was actually pride in my heart that kept me from accepting Christs love. Who was I to think that my sin was somehow greater than anything that could be covered by the unconditional love and grace that Christ showed on the cross, by dying four our sins.

I now fully believe that there is nothing that can separate me from Christs love. That does not mean I go off and go crazy and do all this sinning and abuse God’s grace. But it pushes me to try to live as close to Christ, my Father, because I know that He has the only love that is unconditional.
