Look Good, Feel Good, Play Good?

As more of a country boy, I grew up playing sports and not caring so much about my uniform or how I looked on the outside. I was more concerned with how I performed on the field. In college, I was introduced to a saying by one of our wide receivers, “if you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good.” My journey to “looking good” so I could “play good” began. I was dressing like a man sponsored by Under Armor and Nike. Did it work? Not really!

Fitness, as a man, is less about looking good and more about stewarding the body God gave us to the best of our ability. After all, our bodies are temples.

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Yes, in this context, Paul is talking about sexual immorality. But he states the simple truth that our bodies are “temples of the Holy Spirit”. When we make a decision to trust in the life, death and resurrection of Christ, the Holy Spirit moves into our bodies. We become in dwelt. God with us, God in us. If our bodies are clean, the temple is clean. Our physical and mental fitness are essential to our ability to serve others and to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

Keep the Temple clean.
