Passivity Meets Accountability

In Luke 12:48, Jesus delivers a powerful message that reverberates with our tribe: “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” These words echo through time and circumstance, reminding us of the weighty significance of accountability. Christian men are recipients of a costly gift – faith. It’s a gift that calls us to climb to a higher standard of living, one guided by the teachings of Christ. However, it’s essential to recognize that this gift carries an enormous responsibility. We are entrusted with the duty to demonstrate our faith, not merely when it’s convenient but especially when it’s challenging.

Living our faith accountably means aligning our lives with the expectations that come with our beliefs. It involves recognizing that our faith isn’t a passive acceptance of salvation but an active commitment to imitate Christ’s example in our daily lives. Bonhoeffer famously called passive acceptance of salvation without discipleship “cheap grace”. He confers, “Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession, absolution without personal confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate… Such grace is costly because it calls us to follow, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life. (Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship)

Our ultimate accountability lies with God, the One who set our hearts free. He has bestowed upon us the gift of faith and anticipates us using it wisely. God desires us to be His instruments in this world, spreading His love, grace, and forgiveness. Our faith is a treasure, but it’s also a responsibility to be responsible stewards of God’s message and love.

Accountability extends to our fellow believers. We are called to support and challenge each other to grow in our faith. Proverbs 27:17 reminds us that “Iron sharpens iron.” Through meaningful relationships with fellow Christian men, we can hold one another accountable to live out our faith authentically. We have a responsibility to be accountable to the world around us. Our actions and words should mirror the love and teachings of Jesus Christ. In a world teeming with distractions and temptations, we are called to stand as beacons of light, illuminating the path to a Christ-centered life.

Luke 12:48 underscores that much is expected of those who have been given much. As Christian men, we have received the immeasurable gift of faith, and with it comes the responsibility to authentically live out our faith, embracing love, responsibility, and accountability. We have missed the point altogether if we view accountability as a burden.

Accountability isn’t a burden but an opportunity to be faithful stewards of God’s grace and truth.

By doing so, we fulfill our purpose as Christian men, radiating the light of Christ in a world grasping for truth.
