The Men of Iron Minute

Peering into Death’s Doorway

As a man nearing the half-century mark, I am more aware of my health than ever. I buy new gadgets and gismos to ward off age and rigidity. Training my brain and body is an addiction, and like an addict, I often cannot see the difference between use and abuse. Even so, I am pleased with where I am in life. I am not a millionaire, but I am a man of virtue. My life is more characterized by trucks than truffles. My family is more Holiday In than Ritz Carlton. We rally around football instead of the allure of fame. We are a tight family that allows one another to breathe. Not without grief, my wife and I are guides on the side.

Men, younger and older, have dominion. God has gifted and tasked us to bring our kingdom into submission to His Kingdom. Decisions and debates alter the future, while God determines fate. Under God’s authority, we stand watch over those under our care. We ward off physical, spiritual, and emotional evils. Our influence in the home is ordained by God and made useful when submitted to God. In the red-pilled man space of the likes of Andrew Tate, the idea of submission has been perverted and repurposed for the sake of using influence to get what you want. Meanwhile, Jesus’s life exemplified submission as a means to influence the world for good. The longer in the tooth I become, the more I desire to use God’s truth to bolster the dominion given to me.

I have been celebrating another year of life and reminiscing over the nearness of my death. It may sound a bit off for younger dudes, but pondering your death can be a healthy way of leaning into influence. Urgency shocks complacency when we number our days.

I ask the question, “What are you going to do with what you have left?”

Perhaps you should ask yourself the same.
