The Four Man-Killers: Fear | EP. 199

This month we start our series on “The Four Man-Killers” that will knock men off their adventure to know God and their purpose. Week 1 we are talking about Overcoming Fear. What do you fear? What is something that keeps you from reaching your potential as a husband, father and leader? The fears that consistently sit at the top of the list are: fear of failing, fear of being perceived as weak, fear of being incompetent. Why is fear an issue for men? There are so many examples of men being afraid to respond to what God is calling them to in the Bible. You are not alone. Men, how can we overcome these fears?

  • #1 – Recognize and name them – dig deeper into the causes
  • #2 – Bring to the Lord, examine them with Him
  • #3 – Be honest, vulnerable with Him and others
  • #4 – Get accountability, resources to deal with what you can control

SHOW NOTES:

    • These 5 things are consistently listed as the top 5 fears of men
      • Failing
      • Being incompetent
      • Being weak or being perceived as weak
      • Being irrelvant
      • Looking foolish
    • Why is this relevant for us men specifically?
    • Do you see this at work in the relationship/culture around you – even in the Church?
    • There are so many examples of men being afraid to respond to what God is calling them to in the Bible: Moses (flees Egypt, not good speaker/how will they know I’m legit – Ex 4:10-13), spies going into promised land (10 of the 12, seems like a consensus and reasonable – Numbers 13:31-33) Gideon (hiding in the wine press – Judges 6:14-15), Timothy (1 Timothy 1:5-8)
    • Others who seemed unfazed- Noah (fear of ridicule in building ark), Daniel (in face of empire to eat different, to pray, to be thrown in den), Shad/Mesh/Abed (Daniel 3:16-28) David (Goliath, war), Peter (brash, foot in mouth)
    • “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” – Daniel 3:17 (NKJV)

    • Psalm 46:1–3 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.”
    • Philippians 4:6-7 – “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
