Seeing and Unlocking Potential

The workplace reeked of jet fuel and exhaustion. The blistering Florida sun parched as we worked to maintain aircraft flight readiness. The maintenance department steadily barking threats and orders, spurring our energy and fueling bad attitudes. The “suits” and the technicians didn’t see eye to eye, and their long history only lengthened the divide. The technicians murmured as if their attitudes could reverse the gravity of the tyrants calling the shots. Everyone was aware of the stakes, yet the “Pharoah-esque” demands seemed unfair.

Task to task, we knocked off the list of gripes while the boss stacked more requests. The tensions were high, and morale was low. The days strung together like a slow-burning fuse waiting for detonation. The groanings grew louder and louder as the days relentlessly progressed. Full of relief, the tap shut off, and the managers decided that enough was completed. The maintenance staff was elated! Finally, they could see the light at the end of the tunnel, and they wouldn’t have to work all weekend (again).

Jeff looks over as the work center clears and tells me I need to stay behind. My face displayed my reluctance, and my body language conveyed dismay. Jeff, a mentor, explained that he thought I would be a good candidate for a national apprenticeship program. Still, it would require time and effort after work hours. I was boiling. He didn’t seem to care. He had volun(told) me to do it, and in time, I would know why. Being a good mentor, Jeff believed in me. He saw potential in me, and this would guide me to a better future.

Although my pride took a direct hit, I said I would do it and am glad I did. Years later, Jeff’s invaluable mentorship would prove worthwhile as I entered college. Jeff’s well-intended direction broke through my prideful deception. Jeff’s relentless spurring helped me to achieve what I didn’t know was possible. All because he mentored, he pressed, and he cared.
