Spiritual Leaders Lead Like Jesus

The title ‘head of the house’ inevitably may carry assumptions about the role that may or may not be rooted in the Bible. Many church traditions teach that as a man, you are given assumed power and privilege to rule over your family however you wish. This can and will lead to pride, selfishness, isolation, and abuse; all of which are vastly different from the kind of leadership that Jesus exemplified.  

To know what leadership looks like, we need to start with Jesus. 

Today we’ll start with His overall attitude and approach to His own power and authority. Philippians 2:2-8 describes Jesus as the rightful ruler of all creation – He is the very nature of God and deserves to be served by every creature in the universe.  

Instead of claiming His rightful glory and power, He lays it down. He trades in a crown for dirty sandals. Instead of wielding power, He yields His power. The One who gives life allows those He created to take His. The King of the universe acts unlike any earthly king and leads by serving. 

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3-4) 

You might be married, single, or have kids. No matter how you define ‘home’ right now, your responsibility is not to your own agenda, but to the Lord’s plan for those you serve. The first step in leadership is being aware of your attitude and assumptions about leadership. Read through the passage again and ask yourself these questions: 

1. Does my attitude and actions reflect how Christ leads? 
2. Am I aware of the needs of others in my home? 
3. Where is God asking me to sacrifice and serve others?
