Spiritual Leaders Love Like Jesus

Once your attitude and vision is set like Jesus, the next step is to lead by carrying out the plan. The role of spiritual leader is not a position of privilege and comfort. The weight of leadership is a heavy responsibility that requires work on behalf of others – sometimes who may not recognize or deserve it.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church... (Ephesians 5:25)

That should stop you in your tracks and make you consider the cost of your role as a leader. How did Jesus love the church? Both passages we studied this week demonstrate that Jesus loved by giving up His own comforts, privileges, and power. He became a humble servant and was obedient to the point of being tortured to death on a cross. Jesus gives everything of Himself in the process of pushing us across the finish line of our future glory.

Not only does Christ have a vision that seems far from our current reality, but He also knows we cannot make it on our own efforts. In fact, the only way to get us there is by doing most of the heavy lifting Himself. He gives Himself up, He cleanses us, He presents us to Himself clean.

Spiritual leaders do the hard work to lead by loving sacrificially.

The next time you think being a man gives you some assumed privileges and rights, remember what the Creator of the universe did with His. Jesus humbly sacrifices Himself with hard work to lead us into a future vision of ourselves that only He could imagine. It’s time you ask God for that same attitude, vision, and plan for your house. Be a leader who leads like Jesus.
